US quantum computing sector sees commercial breakthrough

The United States quantum computing industry is moving from laboratory research to large‑scale commercial operations. A $2 billion infusion from the CHIPS and Science Act has given firms a runway, but the deeper shift is driven by enterprise bookings and the rise of high‑yield wafer fabrication.

IBM has launched a $1 billion‑funded subsidiary, Anderson, to build a dedicated 300 mm quantum wafer fab, separating the capital‑intensive foundry from its core business. GlobalFoundries has created a Quantum Technology Solutions division backed by a $375 million CHIPS Act grant to produce components across superconducting, trapped‑ion and photonic modalities. Meanwhile, D‑Wave Quantum reported a 1,994 % jump in Q1 2026 bookings, highlighting accelerating demand for quantum‑as‑a‑service platforms.
