US racehorse must be renamed due to Hitler association
A racehorse in the United States must be renamed after the US Jockey Club determined its original name, ‘Austrian Painter’, was inadmissible. Following a formal complaint, a review concluded the name could be perceived as offensive, as the term is often used online as a euphemism for Adolf Hitler.
The horse, which recently won its debut race at the Horseshoe Indianapolis racetrack, was originally named by its owner to honor the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, citing his wife's family heritage. The owner had previously proposed other controversial names, including ‘My Struggle’, the English translation of Hitler's ‘Mein Kampf’.
The horse has now been renamed ‘Merrylegs’, a name chosen by the owner's daughter.
