US reaffirms NATO commitment and European interest

US Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby has reaffirmed the United States' commitment to NATO's collective defense, stating that Europe remains of ‘fundamental interest’ to Washington. Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Colby noted that while the US administration is prioritizing the Western Hemisphere and the first island chain in Asia, the transatlantic relationship remains central.

Colby praised European allies for increasing their defense responsibilities and support for Ukraine over the last two years. He highlighted a shift toward concrete, practical discussions regarding Europe taking primary responsibility for its own conventional defense. He also expressed interest in how nations such as Poland, Germany, and the Netherlands will manage their significant long-term defense investments.

Despite political uncertainties and criticisms regarding the Trump administration's approach to international alliances, analysts suggest the transatlantic bond remains resilient due to shared interests and values. While some experts advise Europe to prepare for greater security autonomy, the consensus points toward a potential consolidation of NATO through a strengthened European pillar.
