U.S. regulators launch antitrust inquiry into agricultural equipment market
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) have launched a public inquiry into the agricultural equipment market to investigate potential anticompetitive conduct. The investigation follows a growing number of complaints from farmers regarding barriers to acquiring machinery and the essential services required to maintain it.
The announcement triggered a significant sell-off in agricultural equipment stocks. Caterpillar Inc. shares fell as much as 6.4%, while Deere & Co. saw declines of up to 5.7%. Other major players, including AGCO Corp. and CNH Industrial NV, also experienced sharp drops, with AGCO falling 8.4% and CNH 7.3%.
Analysts suggest the market reaction may be disproportionate for some companies. For instance, Caterpillar’s agricultural segment represents a relatively small portion of its total business compared to its construction, mining, and power generation divisions. In contrast, Deere & Co. maintains a much higher dependency on the agricultural market, making it more sensitive to potential regulatory changes.
