US regulatory and legal challenges face election and press access hurdles
Legal challenges continue regarding President Trump’s decision to ban reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly is considering whether to grant a preliminary injunction to prevent the White House from further restricting access while the case proceeds. The news organizations argue the ban interferes with critical coverage and sets a precedent for penalizing fact-based reporting. While journalists briefly regained access following a temporary restraining order, the White House has reportedly refused to allow certain outlets into the Oval Office.
Simultaneously, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) is currently unable to perform its regulatory duties due to a lack of a quorum. With only two of its six commissioner seats filled, the agency cannot open investigations, issue fines, or write new rules. This paralysis comes as lawmakers express concern over AI-driven threats to election integrity and the potential for chatbots to spread misinformation ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
