US remodeling industry sees employment growth and rising input costs

The residential remodeling industry is seeing increased market share driven by aging housing stock and an aging population. According to data from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the number of residential remodelers employed in the second quarter of 2026 was approximately 454,100, representing over 49% of total residential building construction employment.

While remodeling employment fell 1.0% year-over-year, it remains 19% higher than pre-pandemic levels. Average nominal hourly earnings for remodelers rose to $37.91, a 2.3% increase year-over-year. However, real earnings have turned negative as wage growth has trailed inflation indices.

To assist consumers navigating these market shifts, Scala Design & Construction has released a guide to help homeowners compare kitchen remodel cost estimates. The resource emphasizes the importance of itemized quotes to avoid unexpected costs associated with cabinetry, appliances, and tile, which are often obscured in vague, lump-sum estimates.
