US Representatives introduce bill to repeal Section 230
US Representatives Mark DeSaulnier and Jimmy Patronis have introduced the Sunset Section 230 Act, a bill aimed at repealing Section 230 of the Communications Act. The proposed legislation, announced on September 10, 2026, would enact the repeal two years after its passage.
Section 230, established in 1996, currently protects online platforms and services from being held liable as publishers for content posted by third parties. The new six-page bill seeks to repeal these protections without proposing a replacement framework for liability.
Representative DeSaulnier cited concerns regarding the impact of social media on teenage mental health, while Representative Patronis criticized big tech companies for their influence on youth. If passed, the repeal could expose social media giants, community forums, review sites, and news media comment sections to significant legal liability for user-generated content.
