US Republican congressmen urge visa restrictions for corrupt Albanian officials

Two Republican members of the US Congress, Joe Wilson of South Carolina and Keith Self of Texas, have sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing concern regarding the state of democracy and the rule of law in Albania.

The congressmen are requesting that the State Department consider invoking Section 7031(c) of US law, which allows for visa restrictions on foreign nationals identified as being involved in significant corruption. These measures could potentially extend to the immediate family members of the identified individuals.

In addition to corruption concerns, the letter seeks information on US support for judicial reform in Albania and the cooperation of the US Embassy in Tirana regarding the protection of journalists and protesters. The lawmakers highlighted that political protection of officials under investigation may hinder anti-corruption institutions. The request specifically mentions the case of former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, who is under investigation for alleged interference in public procurement processes.

Separately, protests have occurred in Tirana, with demonstrators calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Rama has rejected these calls, suggesting that foreign interests may be attempting to obstruct Albania’s path toward European Union membership.
