U.S. Republicans face election risks amid inflation and Iran tensions
The Republican Party faces a challenging position ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3. Current Republican control of both houses of Congress is at risk, as Democrats require only three additional seats to seize the majority in the House of Representatives.
Economic concerns and foreign policy tensions are primary drivers of this political uncertainty. According to a joint poll by the Associated Press and NORC at the University of Chicago, only 26% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s economic policies, while 65% believe White House policies have directly contributed to the rising cost of living. High fuel prices remain a significant issue, with gasoline averaging $4.41 per gallon in early October.
Additionally, military tensions with Iran are impacting political standing. The poll indicates that 71% of Americans disapprove of White House actions regarding Iran, and 69% believe the conflict does not warrant U.S. involvement. Instability around the Strait of Hormuz has also been linked to rising oil and fuel costs.
