US Response Limited as International Aid Arrives for Guyana Ferry Disaster

A maritime disaster involving the MV Barima ferry in Guyana has left more than 70 people dead. The United States has offered only condolences through a social‑media post by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and a statement from the U.S. Embassy, with no U.S. personnel, vessels or equipment deployed. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have not publicly commented.

France dispatched a 15‑member team from French Guiana, including divers, medics and a mechanic. Trinidad and Tobago mobilised air and naval assets and a Coast Guard vessel, while Brazil’s navy assisted with diving missions. The CARICOM Private Sector Organisation pledged support. China, the European Union, Canada and the United Kingdom issued statements of sympathy but did not send operational assistance. The limited U.S. response follows earlier promises in Washington to help lead Guyana’s energy and infrastructure development.
