US restaurant consumers prioritize dining but adopt value-driven spending
Recent data and consumer reviews indicate a shift in American dining habits as consumers become more selective with discretionary spending. According to the National Restaurant Association’s Q2 2026 Consumer Insights Survey, restaurants remain a top priority for discretionary spending, with 56% of consumers spending money at restaurants recently. However, nearly 40% of consumers report visiting restaurants less frequently than they did three months ago.
Consumers are increasingly adopting value-driven behaviors. Approximately 36% of diners report spending less than the previous quarter, with many trading down by ordering fewer add-ons, such as desserts or drinks, or choosing less expensive establishments.
Simultaneously, specific restaurant chains are facing scrutiny over service and quality. Reports indicate that brands like Benihana and Wendy’s have dealt with customer complaints regarding inconsistent food quality, understaffing, and service delays. These issues, alongside rising prices, are contributing to a landscape where diners are more cautious about the value provided by major chains.
