US restaurant industry faces labor shortages amid immigration enforcement

The restaurant industry in the Southern United States is facing significant operational challenges due to increased immigration enforcement. In Texas, a report from the Texas Restaurant Association indicates that 36% of surveyed restaurants lost employees this year due to enforcement actions, while 28% reported a decline in job applicants. In New Orleans, local businesses are responding through the ‘Chefs for Justice’ campaign. This initiative involves approximately two dozen restaurants, bakeries, and bars that are hosting special events and offering themed dishes to raise funds for the ACLU of Louisiana. The campaign aims to celebrate the contributions of immigrants to the local food scene while supporting civil rights advocacy in response to recent immigration enforcement surges that caused business disruptions and temporary closures in the area.
