US restricts foreign humanoid robots amid security concerns

The United States has implemented significant restrictions on foreign-made advanced robotics to mitigate cybersecurity and national security risks. A new defense bill passed by the House of Representatives prohibits the military from utilizing humanoid robots connected to China and other adversarial nations, citing concerns that highly-sensored machines could be used for spying or sabotage within critical infrastructure.

While the restrictions target high-stakes technology like humanoid robots and robot dogs, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued its first exemption. The Swedish company Husqvarna received conditional approval for several models of its robot lawn mowers, including the 305v IQ, 310v IQ, 420v IQ, and 440v IQ series. The Department of Defense determined these specific platforms do not pose a threat to national security.

This regulatory landscape highlights a growing tension in the global AI robotics race. While Chinese manufacturers like Unitree and Agibot held approximately 80% of the global humanoid robot market share in 2025, American firms such as Tesla, Figure AI, and Agility Robotics continue to focus on research and development amidst these shifting trade and security policies.
