U.S. consumers react to AI-driven dynamic pricing in retail

U.S. consumers are expressing growing anxiety and confusion regarding the use of artificial intelligence and digital price tags by major retailers and restaurant chains. The adoption of 'dynamic pricing' and 'surveillance pricing' models has sparked social media debate, with many shoppers concerned that algorithms may set different prices for different individuals based on personal data.

Walmart CEO John Furner has addressed these concerns, stating that digital labels are intended to save labor time and maintain up-to-date pricing rather than targeting specific shoppers. He emphasized, “We price the product, not the person.” However, a lack of transparency regarding how customer data is collected and utilized continues to fuel public suspicion.

In response to these tensions, legislative and regulatory action is emerging. At least 30 states have considered pricing bills this year aimed at addressing algorithmic and personalized pricing. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission has proposed an enforcement policy warning that businesses may violate consumer protection laws if they fail to disclose the use of personal data to set individualized prices.
