Social Security COLA for 2027 projected at 3.6% by AARP
The AARP predicts that the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 could rise to 3.6%, driven by persistent inflation data. This estimate, based on August 2026 Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures, is an increase from the organization's previous 3.5% projection. If realized, this would represent the largest annual adjustment since 2023.
Other advocacy groups, such as the Senior Citizens League, offer slightly more conservative estimates, projecting a 3.5% increase. The official COLA figure will not be formally announced by the Social Security Administration until October 14, 2026, following the release of inflation data for July, August, and September.
A 3.6% increase would result in an estimated monthly benefit increase of approximately $75 for the average recipient. Experts note that while adjustments help, many seniors continue to face significant financial pressure from rising costs in essential sectors such as healthcare, energy, and groceries.
