US retirement trends show savings gaps and shifting relocation preferences

Retirement trends in the United States show a growing gap between financial expectations and reality, alongside shifting relocation preferences among seniors.

In Maryland, a survey by Northwestern Mutual indicates that residents believe approximately $1.2 million is required for a comfortable retirement. However, research from SmartAsset shows the average retirement savings in the state is only about $120,000. High living costs have led many to deplete savings early or continue working past traditional retirement ages; over 26% of Marylanders aged 65 and older remain in the workforce.

Regarding relocation, data from HireAHelper shows that while Florida remains a top destination, it saw a low net increase in seniors due to high outflow. Instead, retirees are increasingly prioritizing factors such as housing space, safety, tax burdens, and convenience. South Carolina has seen significant net gains in the 65-plus demographic. Emerging popular locations include Greenville County, South Carolina, for its tax benefits, Gainesville, Florida, for lower costs, and Katy, Texas, for its proximity to urban amenities.
