Trump unveils Qatar‑gifted Boeing 747 bridge jet as interim Air Force One
President Donald Trump formally introduced a modified Boeing 747‑8 at Joint Base Andrews on 19 June 2026. The aircraft, originally built as a luxury jet for Qatar’s royal family, has been redesignated VC‑25B Bridge and will serve as a temporary Air Force One while Boeing’s long‑delayed VC‑25B replacements remain in development (now expected around 2028). The U.S. Air Force reported the jet’s commercial value at roughly $400 million and that security‑related modifications were kept under $400 million. Trump praised the interior as “the most luxurious plane in the world,” highlighted the red‑white‑blue livery he chose, and said it will lead the Independence Day fly‑over and be used for the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink emphasized that “the safety and security of the commander‑in‑chief is our highest priority” and that commissioning flights will be conducted before the aircraft enters active service. The acceptance of the foreign gift has drawn bipartisan ethical criticism, which Trump dismissed as “stupid” to reject.
The bridge aircraft will alleviate pressure on the aging VC‑25A fleet, which has served presidents since the early 1990s, and will remain in the presidential fleet until the new Boeing‑built jets are delivered.
