US revokes citizenship of convicted cab driver Gurmeet Singh
The U.S. Department of Justice has revoked the citizenship of Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-born former cab driver convicted of kidnapping and raping a passenger at knifepoint in 2011.
Singh was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2014 for the assault, which occurred in New York while the victim was asleep in his taxi. According to prosecutors, Singh concealed the violent crime during his naturalization proceedings, ultimately becoming a U.S. citizen in October 2011.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York issued an order requiring Singh to surrender his citizenship following a complaint filed by the Justice Department. Singh originally entered the United States in 1992 on a temporary visitor visa and later obtained permanent residency through a family-based petition in 2000.
