US revokes flight restrictions for Mexican airlines

The United States Department of Transportation has revoked a previous order that had disapproved certain existing, proposed, and future flight itineraries for Mexican airlines operating between Mexico and the United States. This decision allows Mexican carriers to increase flight frequencies or introduce new regular services from Mexico City International Airport and Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to US terminals, provided they meet regulatory requirements.

Hotel industry leaders in the Mexican Caribbean, including the Association of Hotels for Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, welcomed the move. They noted that increased seat availability and flight numbers are critical for tourist flow, especially following a summer period where limited aircraft space impacted visitor arrivals. Negotiations for new winter routes are currently being managed by the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council and the Secretariat of Tourism.

Separately, tourism experts reported a decline in air arrivals during August, citing high ticket prices, route suspensions, and security perceptions. There are also concerns regarding the 2027 economic package, which experts claim lacks sufficient budget and priority for the tourism sector's maintenance and international promotion needs.
