US Revokes Visa of Brazil's Ambassador Maria Luiza Viotti Amid Diplomatic Row
On 4 August 2026 the United States Department of State withdrew the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington, Maria Luiza Viotti. The action was framed as a reciprocal measure because Brazil had delayed granting agrément to the U.S. nominee for ambassador to Brazil, former Florida legislator Daniel Perez.
Brazil’s government rejected the U.S. justification, calling the explanations false and a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It accused Washington of attempting to interfere in Brazil’s October 2026 presidential election and said the move was part of a “deliberate escalation of hostile measures.”
The United States clarified that the revocation does not constitute a persona non grata declaration and that Viotti may remain in the United States, though without a valid visa, until Brazil approves Perez’s appointment.
Brazil has also denied visas to two U.S. officials, Riley Barnes and Samuel Samson, citing concerns they would question the integrity of Brazil’s electoral system. In response, Brazil signalled it could adopt reciprocal measures against the United States.
