US sales tax complexity and financial challenges for ecommerce scaling
Ecommerce businesses face significant financial complexities when scaling, particularly regarding cash flow and tax compliance. Rapid revenue growth does not always equate to strong cash flow, as expanding operations often require immediate capital for inventory, advertising, and technology upgrades before new revenue is realized. Additionally, managing sales tax registration and filing becomes increasingly difficult as businesses expand across different states.
In the United States, sales tax rates vary significantly by state and local jurisdiction. Data compiled by Intuit QuickBooks identifies Louisiana as having the highest average combined sales tax rate in the nation at 10.11%. Following a tax overhaul, Louisiana's state rate increased to 5% in early 2025. Tennessee also maintains high combined rates, with a state tax of 7.00% and local rates that can bring the total to 9.75%.
