US sanctions against ICC spark international backlash
The United States administration under Donald Trump has initiated a campaign of sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), following the court's issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza. During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump called on member nations to withdraw from the ICC, describing it as an “uncontrolled institution.”
In response, European leaders and a global coalition have rejected the U.S. demands. Officials from Germany, the Netherlands, and Ireland have expressed firm support for the ICC, emphasizing the necessity of prosecuting the most serious international crimes. European leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, have signaled that the EU will not abandon the tribunal.
The conflict has extended into the digital and financial realms, a phenomenon described by experts as “interdependence as a weapon.” Reports indicate that ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan lost access to essential digital infrastructure, including Microsoft services, following U.S. sanctions. Additionally, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized European digital regulations, such as the Digital Services Act and GDPR, warning that the U.S. will not accept policies that target American technology firms.
