U.S. sanctions target Cuban military officials and firms
On August 6, 2026 the United States announced a new round of sanctions on five Cuban entities and eight senior officials linked to the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. The designations were made under Executive Order 14404, signed by President Donald Trump on May 1, 2026. The entities include Tecnoimport, Tecnotex (a GAESA subsidiary), Duna S.A., the Union de Industria Militar (UIM) and the military‑aircraft repair firm Yuri Gagarin. The individuals sanctioned are Defence Minister Álvaro López Miera, Chief of the General Staff Roberto Legra Sotolongo, José Antonio Remón Rodríguez, Oscar Enrique Biosca Gallego, the military attachés Mónica Milián Gómez (Russia) and Waldo Pérez Cortés (China), as well as senior managers of the targeted firms.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the measures in a State Department statement and on X, accusing the Cuban regime of being a state sponsor of terrorism, of spying on the United States and of serving as a staging ground for Russia, China and Iran. The sanctions freeze any property or financial interests of the designated persons and entities under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibit U.S. persons from dealing with them. The action is part of the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign that has intensified U.S. restrictions on Cuba following earlier designations of the military conglomerate GAESA and the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
