US sandwich generation: 25% of adults balance childcare and elder care

Approximately 25% of US adults are part of the ‘sandwich generation,’ simultaneously raising children and supporting aging parents, according to data from the Pew Research Center. This demographic is growing, with the share of adults in their 50s rising from 36% in 2021 to 45% recently. The pressure is most acute for Americans in their 40s, where 54% meet the criteria for dual caregiving.

Reports indicate that these responsibilities often begin unexpectedly, with many caregivers feeling unprepared for the sudden onset of dual duties. This trend is driven by an aging population and young adults requiring extended financial support.

To mitigate the emotional, physical, and financial strain, experts suggest community-based adult services, such as adult day care centers. These programs offer a more affordable alternative to full-time nursing homes or private home health aides, providing social engagement for seniors while allowing family caregivers to focus on work and childcare.
