US satellite internet race intensifies as Amazon files for 5,000‑satellite network
Amazon has submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission seeking approval for a constellation of more than 5,000 low‑Earth‑orbit satellites. The plan aims to deliver global mobile‑phone connectivity, including voice, messaging, data and emergency services, targeting remote and underserved regions such as mountains, seas and disaster zones. Amazon targets operational status by 2028, with projected costs of $13‑20 billion.
Separately, SpaceX received FCC clearance to acquire EchoStar’s mid‑band spectrum, unlocking roughly 115 MHz for its Starlink Direct‑To‑Cell service. The spectrum deal enables satellite‑to‑device broadband, positioning Starlink to compete directly in the mobile‑telecom market. The approval has drawn political scrutiny over potential market concentration. Starlink already operates over 10,000 satellites and provides internet in more than 150 countries, while Amazon’s proposed network would expand the competitive landscape for satellite‑based mobile services.
