US school districts consider property tax levies for funding
School districts in the United States are navigating budget challenges through proposed property tax levies. In Summit, the Board of Education is preparing to vote on whether to place a $5.9 million mill levy override on the November ballot. The proposed funds are intended for teacher compensation, expanding career and technical certifications, and improving academic outcomes. Unlike a bond, which funds physical infrastructure, this mill levy would provide ongoing revenue for district operations.
In Minneapolis, the Public School Board is expected to approve a preliminary levy within two weeks. This comes as a report from the Center for Effective School Operations highlighted the need for better documentation and more efficient financial processes within the district. The board must balance meeting educational needs with taxpayer impact, following a period of fluctuating levy increases and a proposal from Mayor Jacob Frey for an 11.3% increase to address a $60 million budget gap.
