US school districts face significant financial challenges
School districts in the United States are grappling with severe budgetary constraints and insolvency risks. In Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has been flagged by the California Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team as being at ‘high’ risk of insolvency. The district faces a projected structural deficit and may exhaust its unrestricted reserves by the 2027–28 school year. To address this, LAUSD is preparing for potentially more than 6,000 job cuts over the next three years, driven by a mismatch between staffing levels and a 16% drop in noncharter school enrollment since 2020.
In Missouri, the Bakersfield School District has already implemented over $200,000 in budget cuts due to rising costs and inadequate state support for rural schools. Superintendent Dr. Amy Padgett has criticized recent decisions by the State Board of Education, specifically the approval of an ‘A to F’ grading system for districts that lacks clearly defined calculation criteria or specific targets for proficiency.
