U.S. school districts implement new policies to regulate classroom AI use

School districts in the United States are implementing new policies to regulate the use of generative artificial intelligence and educational technology in classrooms.

In the Montclair Public School District, officials are considering guidelines that would require parental consent for students to use AI for assignments. Under the proposed draft, students in pre-K through eighth grade would be prohibited from using AI except for specific, superintendent-approved exceptions. High school students would be permitted to use generative AI with specific limitations communicated by teachers. The district is also reviewing policies regarding Chromebooks and personal devices to promote intentional, teacher-led technology use.

Similarly, the Quaker Valley School District board approved a policy aimed at ensuring the “ethical, safe and educationally appropriate use of generative AI.” While the district currently utilizes the SchoolAI platform for staff, there is no immediate mandate for student use. The district plans to introduce AI to sixth through 12th-grade classrooms following professional development for staff. Officials noted that the policy is intended to provide governance and guardrails as the technology evolves rapidly.
