U.S. school districts implement new strategies to improve student writing

Educators across the United States are addressing a decline in student writing proficiency by implementing new instructional strategies. Many teachers have reported that students struggle with basic sentence construction, spelling, and punctuation, even in upper elementary grades where students are expected to compose essays.

In response to low state exam scores, several school districts are rethinking their approaches. The Douglas County district, which serves 61,000 students, has increased professional development for teachers focused on evidence-based writing methods. Similar initiatives to prioritize explicit writing instruction are being implemented in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, California, and Rhode Island. School leaders suggest that these targeted instructional changes are showing promising results in improving student writing organization and confidence.
