U.S. school districts implement smartphone bans during instruction

School districts in the United States are adjusting policies to comply with state-level bans on smartphone use during instructional time.

In Illinois, Indian Prairie School District 204 is refining its policies to meet new state requirements. While the district already requires personal electronic devices to be silenced or kept out of sight, administrators noted they must update official policy to include specific guidance on secure storage and to formalize exceptions for students learning English or those with medical authorizations. The district avoids punitive measures like fines or suspensions, opting instead for warnings, parent contact, or device confiscation.

In Michigan, Birmingham Public Schools recently faced public feedback regarding a “bell-to-bell” policy banning wireless devices. While some parents expressed concerns over the implementation process and requested that high school students be allowed to use phones during lunch, the policy aligns with a state law signed in February. The Michigan law allows individual districts to determine specific implementation details for K-12 instruction times.
