U.S. Schools Grapple with AI-Generated Deepfake Threats to CCTV Footage
Security cameras are ubiquitous in U.S. schools, but the rise of AI‑generated deepfake technology has made student images far more vulnerable. Research shows that 40% of public high‑school students reported hearing about a deepfake involving their school during the 2023‑2024 year, and incidents of AI‑created nude images have affected nearly 90 schools and more than 600 students across 28 countries since 2023.
In response, at least half of U.S. states passed legislation in 2025 to address fabricated images created with generative AI. Experts are urging schools to tighten governance of CCTV footage, limit access, keep detailed view logs, and remove identifiable pupil photos from public websites and social‑media platforms to protect privacy.
The growing concern highlights the need for stronger data‑security policies around school surveillance systems as AI tools become easier to misuse.
