US scientific talent migration increases amid funding shifts
A growing number of researchers and scientists are leaving the United States for foreign institutions, driven by changes to the federal grant-giving process and increased political influence over research funding under the Trump administration.
According to the Association of American Universities, university research vice presidents report losing top-tier faculty members to international recruitment programs. These foreign programs, offered by countries including Canada, France, Belgium, and Finland, promise more stable funding and greater academic freedom.
Data indicates significant shifts in specific sectors: physics PhD graduates in 2025 departed the US at the highest rate in 30 years, and early-career biomedical scientists reported a sharp decline in their intention to remain in the country. A report from the Business for Federal Research Funding Coalition noted that more than half of American states have lost scientists to these international recruitment efforts.
