U.S. Secret Service faces rising threats and leadership transition
The U.S. Secret Service is facing a significant rise in threats against its full-time protectees, with Director Sean Curran reporting a more than 40% increase compared to last year. Approximately 10,000 cases have been opened since January.
Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated that the agency has not yet solved the threat posed by coordinated drone swarms. To address this, the agency is implementing a multimillion-dollar counter-drone program that utilizes artificial intelligence, radar, and electronic jamming. The program draws on tactical lessons from the conflict in Ukraine to defend against small, inexpensive drones that could be rigged with explosives.
Amid these security challenges, Matthew Quinn announced he will be transitioning out of his role as Deputy Director after 18 months. His departure follows reports regarding a potential conflict of interest stemming from his previous three-year tenure at drone manufacturer Fortem Technologies. Quinn noted that he is working on a transition plan with Director Curran to return to retirement.
