Marco Rubio identifies Donbas as central focus of Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the conflict in Ukraine is fundamentally a dispute over the Donbas region. During a press conference in India, Rubio noted that the war centers on approximately 11 percent of Ukrainian territory that Russia seeks to acquire but has been unable to capture through military means alone.

Rubio emphasized that a military victory for either side is unachievable and that the conflict can only be resolved through diplomatic negotiations. He asserted that both Russia and Ukraine will need to make concessions to reach a peace agreement. He acknowledged that Ukraine has legitimate reasons for refusing territorial concessions, specifically regarding its national sovereignty and long-term security.

The US government has expressed readiness to act as a mediator in potential tripartite negotiations involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia. While President Donald Trump has suggested that a resolution may be closer than in previous months, the complexity of the territorial dispute remains a primary obstacle to peace.
