US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denies resignation rumors
The United States Department of State has dismissed reports suggesting Secretary of State Marco Rubio intends to resign from the Trump administration. Spokespersons Dylan Johnson and Edgar Vasquez characterized rumors of an early departure as “completely false” and “sensationalist,” specifically refuting claims from The Independent that Rubio might step down to prepare for a 2028 presidential campaign.
Separately, Rubio has reportedly moved to tighten internal controls within the State Department. During a recent meeting with senior officials, Rubio reportedly warned staff against conflicts of interest and emphasized that unethical behavior would lead to termination. This directive follows the resignation of US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle amid allegations of selling access to administration officials, which she has denied.
Rubio also reportedly instructed officials to ensure significant policy decisions are coordinated through his office or Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau. Following this meeting, State Department policy chief Jeremy Lewin was reportedly forced out of his position due to concerns regarding lack of coordination, though no ethical misconduct was cited in his departure.
