U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the wave of right‑wing governments now dominates most of Latin America, calling it an “exceptional success” for U.S. interests. He noted that for the first time in 15‑20 years the majority of the continent’s nations are led by leaders aligned with Washington.

Rubio highlighted the recent inauguration of Peru’s new president, Keiko Fujimori, as another ally, and said he spoke with her by phone after she took office. He also pointed to the upcoming election of right‑wing candidate Ámbaraldo de la Esperiega in Colombia, who is expected to replace left‑wing President Gustavo Petro.

According to Rubio, left‑wing administrations now remain only in Mexico, Brazil and Cuba. He added that Venezuela’s former president Nicolás Maduro was captured in a U.S. raid on Caracas in January and is being held pending trial.
