US Secretary of State Marco Rubio shifts Iran policy toward economic pressure
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has informed allies that the United States does not currently plan to launch new military strikes against Iran. Instead, the Trump administration is shifting its focus toward intensifying economic pressure through new sanctions and a maritime blockade.
This policy, which officials expect to continue at least until the US midterm elections in November, aims to restrict Iranian oil revenues by increasing the flow of Gulf oil through the Strait of Hormuz. US officials noted that the Navy has removed mines from much of the Strait, claiming that Iran has lost control of the waterway to the US.
While avoiding large-scale military operations for now, the administration has not ruled out force if Iran initiates a preemptive attack against US interests or personnel. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue in the region, with Qatar and Oman discussing a proposed framework for managing the Strait of Hormuz, including potential joint mine-clearing plans.
