United States seeks potash import deal with Belarus to reduce Canadian reliance

United States President Donald Trump has announced that Washington is seeking a major agreement to import potash from Belarus. The move aims to secure lower prices for American farmers and ranchers while reducing reliance on Canada, which currently provides the vast majority of U.S. potash imports.

This shift comes amid heightened trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. Following failed negotiations, the U.S. has applied 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, prompting reciprocal duties from Ottawa. While Trump indicated a desire for Belarusian supplies, he later clarified that the U.S. intends to continue sourcing potash from Canada.

The potential deal has raised concerns in Europe. Lithuanian national security advisor Deividas Matulionis noted that while interest in Belarusian fertilizer is no secret, Lithuania must adhere to European Union sanctions. The Lithuanian government is currently seeking more information to determine how to navigate the situation, given that the Port of Klaipėda is a primary transit route for Belarusian potash.
