US Selective Service Modernization Fuels Draft Speculation

The U.S. Selective Service System is updating its draft‑registration mechanisms, prompting commentators to debate the likelihood of a future military draft. Experts note the timing coincides with heightened U.S. involvement in the Russo‑Ukrainian and Iran conflicts.

Former Green Beret Michael Yon told the Daily Caller News Foundation that a draft could materialize “a few years from now,” while Duke University professor Peter Feaver warned that a traditional draft would be a logistical nightmare and lacks political momentum. The Pentagon declined to comment, and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said a draft is not part of the current plan. Senior fellow Jason Dempsey of the Center for a New American Security called a draft “almost impossible” at present.

The Selective Service has issued a request for proposals, due Aug. 14, to develop a digital‑age simulation of a full mobilization pipeline, indicating continued exploration of draft‑related capabilities.
