US Senate Advances Crypto Clarity Act Amid Industry Pushback

SEC Chair Paul Atkins announced that the Clarity Act, a bill that would clearly define when digital assets are treated as securities or commodities, is expected to pass Congress and be signed by President Donald Trump. The legislation aims to eliminate regulatory overlap between the SEC and the CFTC, providing certainty for crypto firms and encouraging innovation to remain in the United States. The Senate Banking Committee has already moved the proposal to a full Senate vote, raising expectations of enactment.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon publicly opposed the bill, arguing that crypto companies like Coinbase are offering bank‑like services without adhering to banking regulations. He warned that stablecoin interest products compete with traditional deposits and should be subject to the same rules. Coinbase responded by emphasizing its role in improving the financial system and protecting users through clear regulation. The outcome of the Clarity Act is seen as pivotal for both the banking sector and the broader crypto industry.
