U.S. Senate Advances Kids Online Safety Act Amid Child Protection Debate

Senate Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz announced that the committee will mark up the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA, S.1748) next week, moving the bill closer to a Senate vote. SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, a Minnesota‑based nonprofit, praised the schedule, saying the legislation would provide the strongest protections for children and hold online platforms accountable for harms that can increase suicidal ideation. SAVE’s CEO Erich Mische thanked Senators Maria Cantwell, Marsha Blackburn, Richard Blumenthal and Amy Klobuchar for their support.

The bill follows the House‑passed KIDS Act, which requires platforms to adopt policies against various harms to minors. In the Senate, lawmakers are debating whether to impose a “duty of care” standard on tech companies. A separate proposal, the Safeguard Kids Act introduced by Sen. Rick Scott, focuses on AI education in K‑12 schools but remains stalled in committee. The ongoing legislative tug‑of‑war highlights the broader effort to address children’s online safety at the federal level.
