U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee fails to advance farm bill

The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee has failed to move the long-delayed farm bill forward, leaving the agricultural industry in a period of legislative uncertainty. The bill, which has not been updated since 2018, is intended to renew crop insurance, disaster assistance, and rural infrastructure programs.

A primary point of contention is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). While the Senate's version of the bill includes a one-year delay for new state cost-sharing requirements for SNAP, Senate Democrats have blocked the measure, demanding a delay of at least two years.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chair John Boozman stated that it will be "a miracle" if the legislation becomes law before the midterm elections, noting that another vote is expected when the Senate returns in September. Agricultural advocates, including the Kansas Farmers Union and the American Farm Bureau Federation, have expressed concern over the gridlock, noting that the lack of a current bill affects farmers, ranchers, and rural communities across the country.
