US Senate approves intensified sanctions on Russia and extension of Iran sanctions

The United States Senate has approved a proposal to tighten sanctions on Russia and extend existing sanctions on Iran until 2031. The measure, if passed by the House of Representatives, would allow President Donald Trump to target major purchasers of Russian energy and five countries assisting in bypassing these sanctions. The proposal includes exceptions for nations whose Russian gas imports fall below 15% of their total volume and are actively working to reduce them, while exempting Europe.

Concurrently, diplomatic tensions persist regarding a potential ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, centered on the security of the Strait of Hormuz. While Washington reportedly seeks stability in maritime shipping lanes and energy markets, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed concerns regarding Iran's nuclear program. Analysts suggest a diplomatic agreement between Washington and Tehran could undermine Israel's strategic objectives, which focus on the long-term structural weakening of Iran's capabilities.
