U.S. Senate Debate Over Crypto Regulation Intensifies

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D‑CT) renewed his criticism of the cryptocurrency industry, calling crypto "the currency of choice for crooks" after a Senate forum where victim Lori Flowers recounted losing her savings in a 2022 romance scam. He warned that the Senate's proposed CLARITY Act would weaken enforcement and facilitate crypto‑enabled fraud. Other Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren, Chris Van Hollen and Lisa Blunt Rochester, also expressed opposition to the bill.

At the same time, negotiations on the crypto regulatory bill have stalled in the Senate. Industry‑backed super‑PAC Fairshake, which has amassed roughly $140 million for the upcoming midterm elections, seeks a vote before the August recess, but Republicans and Democrats remain divided. Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s timetable, Democratic concerns about a premature vote, and Chuck Schumer’s push to delay the legislation have left its future uncertain.
