US Senate debates plans to avert Social Security insolvency
On Wednesday, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on the looming insolvency of the Social Security Trust Fund, projected to occur in 2032 and trigger an automatic 22‑28% reduction in benefits.
Senators debated how to address the shortfall. Democrats led by Ranking Member Ron Wyden warned that a Republican‑proposed advisory commission could hide benefit cuts, and urged raising payroll taxes on high earners and eliminating the $185,000 earnings cap. Republicans such as Bill Cassidy and Ron Johnson countered, arguing that large tax hikes would harm economic growth and likening the program to a “legal Ponzi scheme.” Cassidy highlighted the bipartisan PROMISE Act, while Johnson warned against turning Social Security into a welfare system.
