US Senate introduces Title IX Clarification Act to limit LGBTQ student protections

Republican senators led by Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska have introduced the Title IX Clarification Act in the Senate. The legislation would redefine “sex” in Title IX funding rules to refer solely to biological sex, thereby removing the Biden administration’s interpretation that the law also protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The bill aims to keep transgender women out of women’s sports, restrooms and locker rooms, and to restore what sponsors describe as “fairness and opportunity for women.” It has been referred to the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for consideration. Co‑sponsors include Senators Katie Britt (AL), Jim Justice (WV), Ted Budd (NC), Jim Risch (ID), Mike Crapo (ID), Cynthia Lummis (WY), Rick Scott (FL), Steve Daines (MT) and Tim Sheehy (MT).
