Senate Democrats and Republicans deploy election observers for midterms

Senate Democrats and Republicans are both launching programs to deploy observers to monitor the upcoming midterm elections. Senate Democrats plan to send more than 100 trained congressional staff to nine states with contested Senate races. The Senate Election Observer Program aims to document potential voter interference, threats against election workers, and disinformation tactics during voting and the post-election certification process.

Senate Republicans have confirmed they are training their own observers to match the Democratic effort, with a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune stating they expect their presence to be equivalent to that of the Democrats. Senator Alex Padilla noted that both parties are utilizing official Senate funds for these programs. The observers are intended to observe, document, and report facts without interfering with the duties of election officials.
