US Senate races tighten as Democrats lead in most toss-up contests

As the November midterm elections approach, several highly competitive Senate races are shaping the political landscape. Polling averages from RealClearPolitics indicate that Democratic candidates hold leads in six of the seven contests currently classified as toss-ups, including Texas, Michigan, Maine, Alaska, Ohio, and New Hampshire. The only toss-up race where a Republican holds an advantage is in Iowa, though the margin is less than one percentage point.

In Texas, Democratic State Representative James Talarico holds a 2.6-point lead over Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers by 1.8 points for an open seat. In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson maintains a 2.5-point advantage over Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Analyses suggest that up to nine Senate races are genuinely competitive. These include six Republican-held seats—Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Ohio, and Texas—and three Democratic-held seats—Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire. While the range of theoretical outcomes varies, the tight margins in these races suggest significant potential for shifts in Senate control.
