Senate Republicans reverse Iran war powers vote after Trump clash with Bill Cassidy

On June 23, the U.S. Senate passed a symbolic war‑powers resolution (50‑48) demanding President Trump halt further military action in Iran. Four Republicans—Bill Cassidy, Rand Paul, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski—joined Democrats in the vote. President Trump denounced the rebels, calling Cassidy a “lunatic.”

The next day, after a heated lunch meeting with Trump, Cassidy received a briefing from Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Steve Witkoff. He then voted against a nearly identical resolution, and Rand Paul voted present, allowing Republicans to reject the measure 47‑50‑1. Trump praised the outcome, saying “This vote puts Iran on notice!” The episode highlighted rare intra‑party dissent and the swift reversal of a congressional check on the president’s Iran war strategy.

Separately, the conflict has weighed on oil markets, with Brent crude falling to roughly $72 a barrel—the lowest level since the Iran hostilities began.
