U.S. Senators demand disclosure of Saudi nuclear deal
A bipartisan group of United States senators is demanding that the Trump administration fully disclose the contents of a proposed civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia. The request, sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Energy Christopher Wright, calls for the publication of the main pact as well as classified “side letters” exchanged during negotiations.
The proposed 30-year agreement involves providing Saudi Arabia with civil nuclear technology, including the potential construction of reactors and access to enriched nuclear fuel. Senators expressed concerns regarding whether the deal complies with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its potential to trigger a regional arms race in the Middle East.
There is ongoing debate regarding a possible link between the nuclear pact and the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. While President Trump has suggested the agreement's implementation depends on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords, congressional advisors have noted that the official text of the agreement does not explicitly contain such a provision.
